Welcome to a Weekend Edition of Mintdom!
I did not do much of anything except take care of Minty yesterday because I had a ferocious headache all day. The only other thing I did was clean out a cupboard (to give space to puppy stuff LOL).
Being under the weather gave me some time to think yesterday. I was trying to remember what it was like not to struggle with my weight. I never worried about it in high school because I was thin. I started worrying about it when I had my first child (36 years ago). I went from a size 3 or 5 to a size 7 or 9. Something clicked in my brain and I have been obsessed with my weight until a few years ago when I realized that I had dieted my way up to where I was. Yikes!
While I was out west (a whole other story), I started my present journey – not to lose weight – but to begin a healthy lifestyle. Since then, I have had my ups and downs on the scale and in other ways while trying to figure things out, but here are a couple of things that I have learned.
1. There is NO MAGIC PILL (darn it)
2. There is NO SECRET TECHNIQUE (rats)
3. It takes time, hard work, persistence, and one other thing that is the most important thing of all.
4. The most important thing that will help you in leading a healthy lifestyle is your mind
I think that I have said this before, but it is worth repeating. My dad always says that it takes that little switch in your head to turn on that will help you overcome any obstacles that come your way. I honestly do not know exactly how to turn on that switch, but I do know it starts like everything else – with a choice. It is up to ME on how I choose to live my life. Once I make that choice there are tools I can use to help me live that choice. I hope by sharing my journey and the tools that I use, will help you with your own choices in life.
Here are a couple of other things that I have learned about dieting versus lifestyle:
Diet – it is all about losing (or for some gaining) weight. In my case, I would lose 5 and gain 6, lose 15, gain 20, or lose 25 and gain it back and then some. I measure how well a diet works by what it says on the scale (even when the diet instructor says do not worry about the scale – I STILL measure by the scale). EVERY time that I have been on a program (some successful, some failures, and even some healthy ones), I have gained my weight back because it does not last. Worst of all, each time I gain the weight back I feel worse about myself! It becomes a vicious circle.
Lifestyle – it is all about leading a healthy and balanced life. I measure my success by the quality of my life. I find victories in my daily choices and newfound strategies. Instead of looking for the next and the new weight loss program, I am looking for tools to help me form the best habits – habits that I can use today and for the rest of my life.
Although I am not that thin girl from high school or the size 7 or 9 young woman – I can tell you that I am stronger and healthier mentally, emotionally and even in some ways – physically then I have ever been in my life. In addition, I am on my way to being a healthier weight also.
I need some help with this one. I found this video on You Tube and there is a song on this that I love, called I am a Hottie now, but I cannot find it on You Tube. Do any of you recognize it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x43VB_lfYgg
AffirMINTion: I am living a healthy lifestyle
Make it a GREAT day, IF you choose to.
What are you waiting for?
Life is good!
Mini Minty Moment: My mom reads this to me daily and I like it
The best six doctors anywhere
And no one can deny it
Are sunshine, water, rest, and air
Exercise and diet.
These six will gladly you attend
If only you are willing
Your mind they’ll ease
Your will they’ll mend
And charge you not a shilling.
