Lighten Up!

January 9, 2013

Good morning, Mintdom!

My last post talked about the 7 Day Mental Diet. In that vein, I would like to continue with a Zen story. In Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth – Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose, he tells the story about two monks, Tanzan and Ekido traveling along a muddy road after a heavy rain. The pair came upon a young woman trying to cross the road without soiling her silk kimono. Tanzan at once picked her up and carried her across the road. The monks walked on in silence. After five hours, Ekido could not restrain himself any longer. “Why did you carry that girl across the road?” he asked. “We monks are not supposed to do something like that.”  “I put the girl down hours ago, said Tanzan. “Are you still carrying her?”

If you are struggling with the 7 Day Mental Diet, perhaps you are like Ekido and carrying something on your shoulders unnecessarily. This story gave me a good visual to help me to put down any extra baggage. Even if you are not following this special diet, are there things that are weighing you down? Are you like Tanzan or Ekido?

Simplicity is making the journey of this life with just baggage enough.” – Charles Dudley Warner

AffirMINTion: I carry only very light baggage.

Make it a GREAT day, IF you choose to.

What are you waiting for?

Life is good!

  1. Nice visual Deborah! Alban and I LOVE it!!

Over the past several years, I’ve been working on this “diet” myself — For example, instead of saying “see you later”, which I always used to say — I now say “see you soon!” It’s much more positive and happy! This is a challenging lifestyle change to make when one has lived in the negative for many decades. And, if we do it “one moment at a time” we find it is very simple. (Notice I used the positive “And” instead of the negative “But” in that sentence!) BTW I have always absolutely loved your sign-off: “Make it a GREAT day, IF you choose to!” It IS a choice — let’s choose to be POSITIVE, one moment at a time. (My two cents.)

    1. Love the ‘see you soon’ – thanks! You are definitely one of my ‘Balcony People’!

      See you soon!!

  2. I knew Minty was smart and , if taught, could learn a lot of new tricks…but….I did not know she was a Zen Philosopher too…and can therefore teach us a few new tricks.
