Minty Update – Looking Good!

09/04/2012 – 7,050 steps

Good morning, Mintdom!

Thank you for all the nice messages yesterday for Minty. Minty spent yesterday morning at the Vet because she scarfed up a vitamin D tablet that I dropped on the floor. She is SO fast! One thing that I learned from my daughter (who used to work for a vet) is to give your pet  peroxide to make her/him throw up right away and THEN call the Vet. If I had known that, it would have saved me $200 at the vet who also made her throw up but it had been about a half hour and the pill had already dissolved so they have to give her other things to neutralize the toxicity.  Have any of your pets eaten something toxic? How did you handle it?

Minty had a quiet day yesterday and she seems to be doing OK this morning so I am going back to work but will be anxious to come back home for lunch today.

AffirMINTion: I will always call my daughter first if anything ever happens to Minty like that again!

Make it a GREAT day, IF you choose to

Good morning Mintdom!

<;;;;walking tentatively into Mintdom>;;;; It has been a long time since I posted – mainly because I did not feel like I had anything to share or was not willing to share; however, I missed being here and ALL of you. Even more so, I NEED all of you and the accountability that I get from writing regularly; therefore, I am hitting the Reset Button again.

The nice thing about the Reset Button is that it is always there and you can hit it anytime and as many times as you need to. There have been times that I hit that button more than once a day! The Reset button is nice, too, because once it is hit it is a FRESH START! The mistakes I made are in the past and are good only as learning experiences.

“Keep on beginning and failing. Each time you fail, start all over again, and you will grow stronger until you have accomplished a purpose – not the one you began with perhaps, but one you’ll be glad to remember.” – Anne Sullivan

Have you ever needed to hit the Reset Button? Would love to hear your experience.

AffirMINTion: I will continue towards my goals!

Make it a GREAT day, IF you choose to.

What Would You Do…..?

09/21/2011

Good morning, Mintdom!

What would you do if some genie gave you an extra 5 minutes or an extra hour in your day? What would you do if you were given an extra day? Would you ignore those 5 minutes? Would you waste the extra hour? Would you squander the extra day? Here are my answers.

5 Extra minutes: I would spend cuddling with Minty – I so appreciate her. Sometimes I look at her and think that I could just eat her up because she is so sweet.

1 Extra hour: I would spend learning something – I am an eternal student

1 Extra day: I would spend with – I was going to say family and friends – but honestly, I would spend it with my parents.

Since I do not think that, a genie will ever give me any extra time, I believe I need to make the most of the time that I DO have. That is one of the reasons that I stopped watching TV this past month. It is amazing, all the things that I have done that I would not have done had I been watching TV. I did turn it on during the hurricane and for one of the presidential debates but that was it until Monday night when I turned it on to watch Dancing with the Stars. I like that show and my family watches it.

How would you spend that extra time? Would you spend your time watching TV, playing Facebook games, or sleeping? Time is our most precious commodity – what do you do with YOUR time?

“Lost, yesterday, somewhere between sunrise and sunset, two golden hours, each set with sixty diamond minutes. No reward is offered for they are gone forever.” Horace Man

AffirMINTion: I make the most out of the time that I have each day.

Make it a GREAT day, IF you choose to.

Good morning Mintdom!

I have a question for you this morning. I know, I know, it is early LOL! The question is, in what ways do you feel you are “not enough”? You can fill in the blanks, mine are in parenthesis.

I Am Not…

____________________ Enough (Focused)

____________________ Enough (Assertive)

____________________ Enough (Confident)

I think that one of the obstacles to attaining my goals is when negative thinking creeps its way into my mind. One of these is thinking that I am not enough. I couple of years ago; I took a class called “What’s My Purpose – A Journey of Personal and Professional Growth” with Jim White, PhD (I highly recommend it). One of the chapters talked about this very thing. One paragraph from a worksheet in particular struck me:

“More often than not, you feel as if you are not enough when, in fact, YOU ARE ENOUGH! Do you remember the story of The Wizard of Oz? The Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Lion were all seeking something they did not believe they had. A funny thing happened when they got to Oz and met the Wizard. They each discovered that they already had what they were seeking.  They just had not acknowledged it. Is it possible that you have all that you need?

Look over your answers again with the eyes of someone who has just visited The Wizard of Oz and now answer these questions.

I was “enough” when to each of your previous statements.

I was “enough” when___________________________________________________________

I was “enough” when___________________________________________________________

I was “enough” when___________________________________________________________

My answers were as follows:

(Focus) I spearheaded and chaired a committee to get a community center built in my town (it was state of the art!).

(Assertive) After many meetings and a court battle, I got the voting laws changed in my town to include open registration (and landed on the front page of the Washington Post and in People Magazine)

(Confidence) I applied for, and got my dream job with an International Trade Association (The Supermarket Association)

I am saying the same thing that Victor Frankel and Minty said, only I took a lot longer to say it!

Maybe this evening when it is quiet, you might think about these questions and fill in your own blanks.

AffirMINTion: I am enough for whatever I want to do in my life!

Make it a GREAT day, IF you choose to.

What are you waiting for?

Life is good!

Good morning Mintdom,

Ten years ago today, the day after 9/11, I spent on my couch, glued to the TV; in fact, I spent the next couple of days like that. Our office remained closed until after the weekend. For the next couple of weeks there were several scares, but eventually things got back to a normal routine, a new normal routine, with heightened security in our building and around Washington, DC. I was grateful to be back at work and living my life.
One of the lessons that 9/11 taught me was to cherish my life, my loved ones, and my country. Our whole life could change in a flash. What was a lesson you learned from that day, ten years ago?

September 11, 2001 – A Small Look Back

September 11, 2011 – Ten Years Later

Good morning Mintdom,

It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years since that horrific day. On that day ten years ago, I was working for the Supermarket Association in downtown, Washington, DC. My office was across the street from the White House and you could see the Pentagon from a couple of the offices. I rode the commuter bus to work from Sterling, Virginia. I could almost see Dulles Airport from the lot where I caught the bus. Looking back at that day, I was standing at the bus stop at the same time that the terrorists were getting on Flight 77 – the plane that hit the Pentagon.

It is funny how you remember little things on a big day. I remember that morning on the bus.  I remember talking with the bus driver and a few passengers that morning saying, “Another day – another dollar.” Whenever I hear that phrase, I think about that day.

Our office had TV in most of the offices.  My boss had a TV in hers; it was always on. I was at my desk when the first plane hit in New York. I heard someone say that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I walked into my boss’s office just as the second plane crashed into the other tower. I heard voices say that it was a terrorist attack.  I guess I could not get my mind around that because I kept thinking that something was wrong with the FAA’s radar in New York. Who could have imagined?

My boss had just come in and I had just hung up the phone with one of my daughters when the plane hit the Pentagon.  I heard someone shout, “They just bombed the Pentagon.” I remember going to one of the offices, to see the Pentagon with big black smoke billowing out of it. One of our lawyers was standing there crying. When I was in school, I remember learning that the Pentagon was impenetrable.

After they hit the Pentagon things and the timing of things is a blur. I can tell you that as much as I would like to say that I was a hero that day, I was not. I could only think of one thing, and that was how I was going to get home.  A couple of people were going to take the metro home. I could not imagine going into a tunnel after what had just happened. It did not feel safe anywhere. One of our vice presidents lived out in my area and drove in to work. I did not know her, except to say hello, but I asked her if she could get me to Sterling. Of course, she said yes. She was my hero that day.

I do not know why, but I had two cell phones that day. Neither of them worked locally because the lines were jammed; however, I was able to call my parents who were in Minnesota at the time.  They in turned called my kids to let them know that I was all right and leaving the city. We were listening to the car radio at first, but it too much for us to listen to, and we decided to turn it off.  I do not remember if that was before or after the plane crashed in Pennsylvania.  I did not know that the Twin Towers fell until I got home. What would normally take 20 minutes – took us four hours to get out of the city. The Maryland, Virginia Beltway never looked so good to me, nor has it since that day. I spent the next two days glued to my TV.

I do not know how to describe how I felt on that day or how I feel remembering it. Normally I am good during a crisis and only after it is all over, do I let my emotions overcome me. That never happened after that day. I have cried some over the years when I see a movie or a news report of September 11, 2001, but never just let it go. Maybe it would have been too much for me or maybe I have never felt that it was over.

I hope we will always remember all the people that died or had family members and friends that died, and especially all of the heroes.  I will remember mine.

My sign off is especially meaningful to me today.

Make it a GREAT day, IF you choose to.

What are you waiting for?

Beginnings, Middles, and Endings

PS My mom and I were on vacation on Monday, and she said that I could do Minty Monday on Tuesday.

Good morning, Mintdom!

September is an awesome month for many reasons, but the biggest reasons are that I get to celebrate so many birthdays!  My sister Becky celebrates on the first day of the month and my mom celebrates on the last day of the month.  In between those days this year, my Auntie Jean celebrated 90 years, my youngest daughter, Kelly celebrates 32 years today, and my son Michael, will celebrate 34 years on the 14th. Finally yet importantly, my good friend, Ann celebrates _ _ years on September 8.Happy birthday to you all – I love you.

I also like September because, like Mondays, it feels like the start of something fresh. I know, I know, summer is over and the leaves begin to turn and fall off the trees. They sure put on a spectacular show before they fall though. September is the start of a new school year and new routines.

September 1, I started Dave Ramsey’s, Total Money Makeover and I am keeping track of where my money goes. Yesterday, I took my list to the grocery store, and stuck with it.  I had only $20 in cash with me I spend $19.91! I would have won something if I were on the Price is Right game show. LOL

I know there is an elephant in the room right now as we come upon the tenth anniversary of September 11. That is the one mar on September. That horrific day marked the end for many, and the beginning of a new way of living for the world. The events of that day also shined a light on America and the many heroes of that day, and there were many from all walks of life. What an amazing country we live in!

As I read this post, I feel like I am all over the place. Maybe I am like September with its beginnings, middles and endings. In any case, I hope that you have a GREAT one!

Lazer Focus on Each Day!

08/31/2011

Good morning Mintdom

Can you believe that today is the last day of August? Even though it is not the official date, I always consider August 31 the last day of summer and September 1, the first day of fall. Anyway, the summer sure has flown by quickly. My Mom used to tell me that the older I get, the faster that time passes. My dad always says that we have 24 hours in a day, how will we use our time.

Last week’s earthquake and hurricane and brought my focus back to how we could have a lot less time in this world then we think. We really need to make the most out of each day. This week a friend landed unexpectedly in the hospital. It shows me how we need to appreciate the people in our lives, and all that we have because we never know if today will be our last day or theirs. I do not mean to be morbid; I just feel this sense of urgency to make the most out of each day. I cannot tell you enough how grateful I am for you, my family and friends, and for my health. I hope that I never take any of you or anything that I have for granted. I am truly blessed.

I keep what I call a little celebration / prayer journal. On one side, I write down three things that made me smile the day before which, actually turns out to be three things that I am grateful. Sometimes, it is a big thing like settling on my new house, and sometimes it is a very small thing, like watching Minty playing with a toy. On the other side, I write my prayers although I always start with, thank you God… It sure is a GREAT way to start my day, to focus on the good in my life, and to remember those that are in need. It is interesting to look back at the things that I was thinking in past years. Yes – years – it has been years since I started this; it seems like yesterday.

What are some of the things that you do to keep you focused and appreciative all that you have in life? I think today, one of the things that I will do is to call my Mom and Dad to say I love you and I am grateful for every moment I have had with you – even when I was a teenager! LOL

Minty Monday: No Worries

        No Worries

Good morning, Mintdom

An earthquake and a hurricane in one week would probably rattle most people’s cages, but actually, Minty and I remained fairly calm throughout last week. I think part of it was that I have not been watching TV and so I missed a lot of the hype. I DO get national and local alerts on my phone so I am not totally out of the loop, and I DID peak at the news a couple of times over the weekend to see where the hurricane was and where it was going. It was easy to find as it was on all local and news channels non-stop. I did prepare for the worse (brought in light stuff from the patio, including the glass top to my table, got my flashlight and candles out and made extra ice for my refrigerator) and was hoping for the best.  That is probably why Irene passed over my county! LOL!  Anyway, I am happy that I did not spend my weekend worrying. I kept thinking of that verse in the bible that has always helped me in the past.

Matthew 6: 34 Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

You do not have to be a Christian to appreciate this verse.  I DO like Minty’s telephone visual. So if you call me and get a busy signal – you will know why!  How do you keep from worrying?

AffirMINTion: I keep my head and heart full of positive things.

Make it a GREAT day, IF you choose to.
