A Question About Fear

Still PedoMINTerless

Good morning Mintdom,

I have a question for you today.  There is an acronym for the word FEAR, which I do not quite understand: False Evidence that Appears Real. I understand part of it as far as having a fear of losing your job, losing your spouse or loved one, losing your health, or losing your child; however, what if one of those things DOES happen in your world? Isn’t that Real Evidence?

What do you do when you are facing one of these things? To me, this acronym is not helpful when I am facing something as serious as an illness in a loved one or myself. I love.  So what DOES help? I am fortunate to have a strong faith in God, that everything happens for a reason and that He is always for me, even when I cannot possibly see it. I know that He sees around the corners.  The other thing that helps is to have the love and support of my family and friends, especially if you have that one person that you can talk with about anything. The last thing that I know can help my fear, whether it is a false fear or not, is to have a plan.  Included in the plan is to keep putting one foot in front of the other; to immerse myself in positive people, places and thing; and to take special care of my body, mind, and spirit.

“The more serious the illness, the more important it is for you to fight back, mobilizing all your resources – spiritual, emotional, intellectual, physical. – Norman Cousins

My question today, is not so much about the acronym; it is about what you do when facing something serious. I would love for you to post your answers here or on, you will be helping me and others.

Try Something New – You Might Like It!

07/06/10 – No Data
4 glasses of water
Streak: Met (5:30 am)
Good morning Mintdom,

I FINALLY found my pedometer – yikes! I do not like going without it; it is as if every step is wasted!  Lo Anyway, I have it back and I really NEED to get up to Weight Watchers and get a spare.

Many of you have heard that I am a member of Spark People.  It is a GREAT site for learning how to live a healthy balanced life.  Yesterday, I signed up for a summer camp in one of my groups.  I think it is going to be similar to the TV show ‘The Amazing Race’.  There are challenges every day.  One of the challenges I accepted is to be out of bed BEFORE 6:00 am during the week.  I used to do that every day, but lately, I have slacked off.  I am trying to go for the longest streak of doing that, that I can. I will be putting this up every day.  I also need to track a nutrient each day, but I have not decided what I want to track yet.  I will let you know.  That did not sound too difficult for me. Well the kicker is, I members are given a partner to compete with other teams – Yikes!  I needed something new and here it is; it is a little scary, but I am up for the challenge.  If you are interested in getting involved visit and you can enter your OWN Amazing Race!

AffirMINTion: I love to take on new challenges!

Make it a GREAT day, IF you choose to.

What are you waiting for?

Life is good!

My mom gave me a crumpled piece of paper yesterday– I was a little afraid at first, but then I liked it.

Facing Everyday Fears

10/07/09 – 4,114

Food Journal – Yes

Good morning Mintdom,

One of the positions that I am keeping is Chairperson of the Communications Committee for the community where I live.  I have not headed up a committee like this before with people that I do not know (YET). I want to do a good job – no, I want to do a GREAT job.  LOL I comMINTed to this before I began streamlining my life, and if it came up now, I would not have volunteered; however, since I already made the comMINTment, I will stay for one year.  One of the tasks that we are responsible for, is to begin a newsletter.  Last night we had our second newsletter meeting. You would be very proud of me because the first thing that I asked the group was whom did we decide was the chair?  They all looked at me and I said that it was not me.  This is a GREAT committee because within a minute, we chose the perfect person to chair the sub-committee, and that person was not me!  My job is to write a health column and collect sponsors; I love both of those jobs!  Ultimately, as chair of the committee, it is my responsibility to make sure that the sub-committees get the work done – that is heavy for me.

You are probably wondering why I am sharing all this with you.  First, it is one of the reasons that I was unable to get my exercise in yesterday.  The second reason is that I am following through on streamlining my life, BUT the main reason however, is that I want to be transparent as I can be and let you know that I have fears and insecurities about some of the things that I do.  This is all out of my comfort zone. It is easy to head up or be a part of small committees where I know everyone and people like me already. As chair of this committee, I have to answer to the BOD and in front of the WHOLE community – yikes!  I do not mind telling you that I am that this is a huge challenge for me, but if *I* can face my fear and take on this challenge – you can take on your own!

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.” –Eleanor Roosevelt

Is there something in your life that you would like to do, but put off because of your fears and insecurities?  Are there times in your life that you overcame those fears to taste the sweet taste of success?  Please share here or on Mintdom, .  When we share our experiences, it not only helps others; it helps ourselves.

OK…I am off to get my exercise in!

The Mint on FOMO!

07/23/09 – 8,571

Good morning!

I did not walk this morning; instead, I slept in until nearly 6:30. Just look at those steps from yesterday!  In addition to having a good step-day, I worked, I made a quick welcome home stop at my parent’s house, I ran to a store to look for something to wear for my nephew’s wedding on Saturday; I think I found a backup outfit.  When I came out of the store there were storm rumblings, and I prayed that it would hold off at least until I got into my next event, which turned out to be a wonderful networking event held by my friends Gwen Miller and Nancy McAlpine of Middleburg bank (had to give them a plug!). I left by 6:30 in order to make the first Communication Committee Meeting for my community.

<Imagine the sound of screeching brakes here>

“Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.”  -Ambrose Redmoon

I know this quote seems to be a little out of place this morning, but here is how it fits in.  It has to do with my friend Ben, who came up with a new word for the dictionary: FOMO.

F – Fear

O – Of

M – Missing

O – Out

The word means Fear Of Missing Out.  I know, it sounds like a disease and my sister, Nancy, says that I have a terminal case of it.  Of course, the main reason for joining the Communication Committee is that I have FOMO.  I want to know everything about my community.  What I did not expect was the idea that I might end up as chairperson, which is a scary thought!  When I first read this quote this morning, although I appreciated it, I could not think how it applied to me now until I remembered FOMO.  I will confess to you that the fear of taking on the role of chairperson is not as important as my terminal case of FOMO!

Here are my questions for you this morning.  What drives you?  What are you so passionate about that it is more important then your fear.  Please feel free to share your thoughts

AffirMINTion: I am courageous

Make it a GREAT day, IF you choose to!
